Michael Lee Jones

September 29, 1960 — May 13, 2026

Michael L. Jones, passed away unexpectedly on May 13, 2026, at the age of 65. Born on September 29, 1960, at Newport Naval Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island, Michael was the son of the late Carol A. (Conroy) Rodrigues.

Raised in Middletown, Michael attended Middletown High School soon after he devoted much of his life to the commercial fishing industry, working on various fishing boats based out of the State Pier in Newport. His many years on the water, particularly fishing offshore on commercial lobster boats, made him a familiar and respected figure along the oceanfront. Those who knew Michael knew the unmistakable passion he carried for the sea-salt water truly ran through his veins.

As time passed, Michael transitioned his career to serve in the marine pilot community, working for Northeast Marine Pilot Boats in Newport as a deckhand. In this role, he assisted the navigation of large ships, cruise liners, and tugboats entering and leaving Newport Harbor, showcasing his extensive nautical expertise and unwavering commitment to safety on the water. Continuing his maritime journey, he attended Northeast Maritime where he received his US Coastguard Captain operating License. Michael then begun working for Moran Shipping Company on tugboats operating out of New York, furthering his lifelong dedication to maritime service.

Michael's legacy extends beyond his Mariner life long career to his family. He is survived by his sister, Nancy Cleasby, and her husband, Robert, of Middletown. He is preceded in death by his mother, Carol (Conroy) Rodrigues, and his grandparents, Frank M. and Mary L. (Sheehan) Conroy.

Though services will be held privately, a Celebration of Michael's Life will be shared among close family and friends on Friday, June 12, 2026 at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Calling hours will be held from 4:00pm-6:00pm and a funeral service for Michael will be held immediately following at 6:00pm in the funera home. A fitting tribute to a man whose heart was as vast as the ocean he so dearly loved. Michael L. Jones will be remembered with great respect and affection for his steadfast spirit, his love of the sea, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life.
