Milton Alexander Young III, of Newport entered eternal rest on his 70th birthday, Saturday, July 21, 2018.Born in Newport in 1948, he was the only son of the late Ulysses C and Minnie L Young.Milton was educated in the Newport School system and was a 1968 graduate of Rogers High School.Milton went on to attend Johnson amp; Wales University before being drafted into the United States Army where he served the next two years at Forts Dix and Sam Houston in Texas before concluding his duty in Fort Carson, Colorado.Following his military service, Milton returned to Newport to join the Police Academy in December of 1971. He was a graduate of Salve Regina University with a degree in Criminal Justice which he leveraged over the course of his 30 year law enforcement career until his retirement in 2001.Milton was active in the community throughout his life. He spent countless hours helping others from delivering holiday food baskets to providing advice and guidance to young people of the community.He was the Grand Master of the Masonic Temples Stone Mill Lodge in 1984-85 and more recently a Deacon at Community Baptist Church.During his childhood, he was an active member of the Newport Recreational Center (the Rec) where he developed many deep and lasting friendships with his classmates and neighbors. In his early years he enjoyed boxing and playing basketball. He also was an avid golfer and former coach of local youth football and basketball teams. Until his health prevented it, he could be found on the sidelines as a long standing fan of the Rogers High School Football team.Milton lived life on his own terms. He loved sports and games of chance. He was a fan of a good joke and a decent debate. In the end, he was a Father, Brother, Cousin, Uncle and friend who touched and will be missed by many.He leaves to cherish his memory, one son, Matthew A. Young, his former wife, Nancy F. Young and Mother in Law Chi Chi Ferreira, six sisters: Mattie (Doyle) Allen of San Diego CA, Alma Meriwether of Newport, Annie Redford of Dallas, TX, Minnie Wilson and Rosemary (Thornton) James of Atlanta, GA and Debra (Darryl) Heisser of Portsmouth. He was preceded in death by his sister, Josephine Young and Cousin Dr. Barbara Berry Waldon, Ph.D. of San Diego, CA and dear friend Jack Napolitano of Newport. He also leaves a host of cousins, nieces nephews and friends.Calling hours will be held on Sunday July 29, 2018 from 3-7 pm in the Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway in Newport.His Funeral will be held on Monday July 30 at 10:00 am at Community Baptist Church, 50 Marcus Wheaton Blvd in Newport.Burial will be in Island Cemetery 30 Warner Street in Newport
