Alfred "Bud" Schuster, Jr. passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the John Clarke Nursing Center.He was the husband of the late Florence (Esleeck) Schuster to whom he was married for 66 years.Born in Newport, RI in December of 1926, he was the son of the late Alfred and Anna Mae (Barnum) Schuster.Bud graduated from Rogers High School in 1944 and served two years in the US Navy. He earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Salve Regina University. He began his 31 year career as a Newport Police Officer in 1953, retiring as Traffic Sergeant in 1984. Upon retirement, he became Chief of Security at Naval Underwater Systems Center for 3 years, while waiting for Florence to retire from the Newport School System in 1987.One of Bud's favorite pastimes was watching his grandsons play baseball. He also loved wintering with Florence on the East Coast of Florida. His favorite destination was St. Augustine. His summer vacation spots were to the beach or Laconia, New Hampshire. Bud was a former longtime member of the North End Club, where he formed many lasting friendships.He was a communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Middletown since 1963, after moving the family from Newport to Middletown. He was devoted to his faith and could be seen carrying his rosary beads on a regular basis.Bud is survived by his children, Robert Schuster of Florida, James Schuster of Middletown, Deborah Spicer of Louisiana, and Barbara Schuster of Vermont and Middletown, nine grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. He also leaves his "Jepson Lane Family", Dawn Smith Drake, Tod Drake, Fran Smith, and the late Gary Smith, whose kind and compassionate care, never wavered over the years. Bud also leaves his good friends John Jennings and John Frano, who were always a source of comfort and support.Bud was predeceased by his brother, Newport Police Detective Sergeant Edward Schuster.Bud was very appreciative of the wonderful care and love that he received at the John Clarke Nursing Center. He truly regarded everyone there as family, who made his last days comfortable and dignified.Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018 from 5:00-7:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 30 at 8:00am from the Memorial Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Rd, Middletown. Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Columba Cemetery.
