Manuel De Pinho Jr

Manuel de Pinho, Jr., 81, of Newport died December 1, 2017. Manuel was born September 9, 1936 in Gloucester, MA, the son of the late Manuel and Olivia (Nunes) de Pinho. Manny grew up in Gloucester, MA and spent his childhood close to the ocean where his father worked as a fisherman. In 1954, Manny embarked on a unique journey as one of the first Americans granted a study abroad visa with American Field Service and as such, one of the first Americans to enter Berlin, Germany after WWII. He continued his studies at the former Dean Academy and then Boston University. He began his graduate studies at American University and then at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil as an OAS graduate fellow. Before receiving his Master's Degree from Antioch College, he earned a position with OCS in the US Navy. He served for several years in supply and finance positions during the Vietnam War. As a senior vice-president at Morgan Stanley for 40 years, Manny also delivered the daily closing stock market report on WTOP radio. He and his wife Mary lived in Washington, DC for that time but soon found a home in Newport to retreat to as often as they could. Retirement in Newport was the obvious next step and with this new freedom he enjoyed more world travels and continued to pursue his interest the arts. Manny was a sharp, curious, and intrepid thinker, always quick with his wit. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Mary V. de Pinho, his son Michael de Pinho his daughter-in-law Heather de Pinho and his grandson Jaxson de Pinho, all of Newport.
