Robert A. Riegel Sr

Robert Allen Riegel, Sr., 84, of Middletown has left us to be with his wife Abbie and son Michael, on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at Grand Islander Health Care Center. Robert was born July 2, 1933 in Newport, RI, the son of the late Charles Joseph Riegel and Maude (Sisson) Riegel. He was the husband of the late Abbie (Greenman) Riegel, it would have been their 56th anniversary this month. Bob served in the US Army during the Korean War then worked in construction his entire career as a painter. For 20 years, Bob also worked as a bartender at the Irish-American Club on Lower Thames Street in Newport. He was a longtime member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church. He loved bingo at the Middletown Knights of Columbus, and enjoyed spending hours at the beach, especially the concerts at Easton's Beach.He is survived by his children Emily Quarry of Middletown, Robert A. Riegel Jr. of Portsmouth, Susan Watts of Newport, Charles R. Riegel of Fall River, MA, Edward J. Riegel of Portsmouth, and Melissa Mendez-Ortiz of Portsmouth, RI, ten grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and one, great-great granddaughter Harper Marie, and his brother Herbert Riegel.He was predeceased by his wife, Abbie Riegel, his son, Michael A. Riegel, and siblings, Milton, Harold, Raymond, William, and Charles Riegel and Catherine Nasser.Calling hours will be Thursday, December 28 from 3:00-7:00pm at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a memorial service to be held at 6:30pm.Memorial donations may be made to Potter League for Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
