Sofia Lahm, age 87, a former resident of Middle Village NY, passed away February 22nd, 2018 peacefully at Village House nursing home in Newport, RI. Sofia spent the last few years of her life at the Village House and was lovingly cared for by the wonderful staff there.Sofia was born on January 17, 1931 in Czwernka, Yugoslavia to Franz Yudt and Elisabeth (Weber) Yudt. At the age of 17, Sofia came to the United States after WWII. During those first years here in the U.S., a man from her hometown in Yugoslavia knocked on her door to see if anyone needed work here in the U.S. When she answered the door, Peter Lahm exclaimed, "If I knew you were going to be this beautiful, I would have sent my son here, because someday you are going to be my daughter-in-law". Sofia laughed.Sofia became a looper in Mr. Lahm's knitting mill and soon Sofia met Edward Lahm, Peter's son, and eventually became his wife.Edward and Sofia married in June of 1951. They welcomed a son, Peter, in 1953 and almost 18 years later, welcomed a daughter, Cynthia.Sofia lived with her family in Middle Village, NY, and spent summers on Long Island in Eaton's Neck. She was a sweet, nurturing, loving, kind woman who never had a bad word to say about anyone. Her kind soul shone through wherever she went. I will quote a family friend by saying, "She was an amazing, classy woman that was so strong and always was there to help out and provide a lending hand." Many people admired her for her beautiful qualities inside and out.Sofia loved children, to dance, go on walks, spend time at the beach, visit the senior center, and just spend time with family and friends . Sofia also loved music. At any given time you may have found her in the dining room of the Village House singing away.
