Nina Carolyn Todd, known to those who loved her as Carolyn, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on April 11, 2025, at the age of 80.
Born on December 25, 1944, in Denver, Colorado, to the late Dr. Richard Todd Sr. and Nina Louise Johnston Todd, Carolyn came into the world with a spirit as bright as the season she was born into. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later earned a Master of Social Work degree in Psychosocial Treatment from the NYU Graduate School of Social Work.
Carolyn devoted her career to helping others, working in a variety of clinical and community settings before joining Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center in New York City as a psychiatric social worker, where she remained until her retirement. In the late 1980s, she also pursued a successful career as a real estate salesperson, using her remarkable eye for the hidden beauty of a space and her deep knowledge of the city's finest buildings. Carolyn loved New York fiercely and carried its energy in her heart wherever she went.
Carolyn lived with an unmistakable zest for life. She had a quiet, commanding presence, a quick wit, and a brilliant mind that made an impression on everyone she met. Her humor was sharp, generous, and deeply genuine - never seeking attention, but always lighting up those lucky enough to share in it. She treasured her friendships deeply and found joy in the company of her beloved animals, who were as much a part of her family as anyone.
In her later years, Carolyn faced health challenges with remarkable strength and grace. To those who knew her, Carolyn's fierce independence was a defining trait; she lived life entirely on her own terms, with courage and conviction. Throughout it all, her life companion, Denise Nunes, stood steadfastly by her side, caring for her with tireless devotion and love. Their bond was unshakable - a testament to the profound strength of true partnership.
Carolyn is survived by her brother, Dr. Richard Todd, and his wife, Dianne; her nieces, Meredith Curtis and Allison Maguire, and their families; and an extended family including several cousins. She also leaves behind a chosen family of devoted friends, and a legacy of loyalty, resilience, and grace.
Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Stroke Foundation, the American Cancer Society, or the ASPCA would be appreciated. Her vibrant spirit lives on in every life she touched.
