Paul H. Cogswell of Portsmouth, RI passed away peacefully at Newport Hospital on Saturday, September 29, 2018. Born in Essex, Massachusetts on May 25, 1931, he was the husband of the late Loudwina G. (Sousa) Cogswell, the son of Charles Steele Cogswell and Flora Norris Cogswell and brother of Charles Edward Cogswell of Chula Vista, California and Mary Ann (Cogswell) Soares of Newport and Barrington, Rhode Island, all of whom are now deceased. He leaves a sister Bernice E. Oxley of Middletown, Rhode Island.He was the father of Paul J. Cogswell and his companion, Carolyn Tyler, of Santa Cruz, California and their children Shawna, Cutler and Rose, daughter Lorna J. Cogswell of Newport, Rhode Island and her children, Nicole and Alex, son Matthew J. Cogswell and his wife Linda of Tiverton, Rhode Island and their children, Donald, Kenneth, Gabriel and Kellie, son Peter J. Cogswell and his wife Priscilla of Chula Vista, California and their children Brandi and Mitchell, son Morgan J. Cogswell of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, daughter Suzanne Conley and her husband Michael of Middletown, Rhode Island and their children Megan and Michaela.He attended Rogers High School in Newport and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1950 where he served his country honorably and with distinction for 27 years, achieving the rank of CWO-4. His service to his country took him to many places around the world, including Japan and Hawaii. His wife and six children accompanied him wherever possible.He was a member of the Chief Warrant and Warrant Officers Association, USCG, a Master Mason and member of St. Johns Lodge No. 1 A.F.amp;A.M., Portsmouth, Rhode Island and a lifetime member of the Portuguese American Citizens Club, Portsmouth, Rhode Island where he spent many evenings enjoying the company of his friends.He was Papa to thirteen and the great grandfather to ten who loved Big Papa. A large presence in all of our lives, loved and respected by his family and friends. Mr. Cogswell, Paul, PC, Dad, Pops, Uncle Paul, Papa, Big Papa will be grievously missed by all.
