Peter H. Knowles

Peter Howard Knowles, 62 of Newport, Rhode Island, died on July 26, 2026. Born in Newport, R.I. on February 21, 1964, he was the son of the late Dr. Richard and Colleen (O'Connell) Knowles.

Peter is survived by his sister Ann Knowles, brothers Richard (Joseph Logue), and James (Jane) all of Newport, his nieces Gina LaChance and Caroline Knowles , and nephew Jimmy Knowles.

He is also survived by Karolien Thornton-Parkinson (Adam), who was very important to him, and by his godmother Nona Caputi.

Peter is preceded in death by his parents, sister Maureen LaChance, and also by his faithful Jack Russell, Lulu.

Peter was a 1982 graduate of Rogers High School and enjoyed spending time on the water and traveling to Hawaii & Europe. Peter was passionate about military history, nature, science & cooking. He was also an avid New England sports fan, watching all the games religiously.

Pity the person who watched Jeopardy with him.

Known as the Doctor or Doc, Peter worked at the Irish American Club for many years. His natural good humor and quick wit made him a favored bartender, to the point that there was a sign behind the bar noting whether the Doctor was In or Out.

After leaving the IA, Peter worked for many years for his sister Ann at her CPA firm, Knowles & Edge. He was an integral part of the office, often being the person who jumped onto a phone call to reassure and calm nervous clients and using his good humor to ease the stress of tax season. Even during his cancer treatments, he did his best to keep working.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00am on Sunday, August 9, 2026 at Memorial Funeral Home on 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.

Donations in his memory may be made to Save the Bay or the Norman Bird Sanctuary.
