Philomena Delehanty

Philomena Delehanty, 92, of Newport, Rhode Island, died on May 27, 2026. She was the wife of the late Robert J. Delehanty, Jr. Born in County Monaghan, Ireland on January 9, 1934, She was the daughter of Peter and Margaret (Carr) McKenna.

As a teenager, Philomena moved to Newport and she soon found a beautiful life here . Many will remember her from a long career at the Sheraton Islander Hotel on Goat Island, where she ran the dining room for over 20 years. She was also a longtime communicant of St. Mary's Church, and a former member of the Elks Lodge. In these younger years, she enjoyed bowling and walking.

Philomena's family was her greatest joy, and most of her free time for the last 20 years revolved around making time with them, from taking the kids to the beach for a long walk or spending time at home tending the garden.

Philomena is survived by four children; Edward Delehanty of Newport, Brian Delehanty of Portsmouth, Colleen Breitenstein and her husband Kenneth of Newport, and Sheila Delehanty and her husband Kenneth of Warwick, 10 beautiful granddaughters, 11 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. She also leaves two sisters, Christine Duffy and Theresa McGrath both in Ireland, and several nieces and nephews.

Philomena is preceded in death by a son, Robert Delehanty III and her husband.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, June 02, 2026 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, Rhode Island. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 3 at 11:00 am in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Spring Street, Newport.
