Phyllis Gainfort Moe

Phyllis Moe, age 94, of Tiverton, Rhode Island, passed away on August 25, 2018 at Brookdale Sakonnet Bay in Tiverton.Mrs. Moe was born on April 11, 1924 in San Francisco, CA to the late John Christian Hamilton Gainfort , a published playwright, author and editor and the late Isabel (Wright) Gainfort.She was the devoted wife of Sherwood G. Moe.

Mrs. Moe earned her Bachelors Degree in English Literature from Principia College, her Masters in Literature from Columbia University and received a PhD in English Literature from New York University.

She was married in New York on June 11, 1948 and she and her husband moved to Paris, France that Autumn. She worked as an English language instructor, teaching Allied Officers at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (the forerunner of NATO). In 1954, she and her husband moved to Beirut, Lebanon, where she taught English at the International School.

She joined the faculty of Hunter College of the City University of New York in 1961, and retired in 1994 as Chair of the English department. She was fluent in Middle English, Modern French and had a proficiency in Old English, Latin and German. She was considered and expert on Chaucer, Milton and other Medieval authors, and later developed a deep interest in the structure of European fairy tales. She is the author of A New Text of Cur Mundus Militat, and the co-author of Companions of Our youth: Stories by women for Young Peoples Magazines, 1865-1900.

She spent fifty-five summers at a small cottage named, Windblown in South Orleans, MA on Little Pleasant Bay, where she enjoyed daily swims, sailing, canoeing and long walks.

Besides her husband of sixty-nine years, she is survived by her two sons, Christopher R. Moe and his wife Meaghan K. Moe, of Portsmouth, RI and Timothy H. Moe, of Hong Kong, and five grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Moe, Alison Gainfort Moe, Tanya Redmond Moe, Andreas Hamilton Moe and Ainsley Virginia Moe.
