Ralph Vernon Thompson

Ralph V. Thompson, 81, formerly of Portsmouth, died Thursday, September 6, 2012 at the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown.He was the husband of the late Sheila M. (Currie) Thompson, with whom he shared 39 years of blissful marriage.Born in Logan, West Virginia on April 9, 1931, he was the son of the late Roy and Hazel (Bartoe) Thompson. He had four brothers and one sister. Mr. Thompson enlisted in the US Navy at an early age, escaping the probable destiny of coal mining work. He was a veteran of the Korean War, retiring after 20 years of faithful service. He later worked as Auto Parts Manager for Nunes of Newport.He is survived by his children, Julia Kinsella of Portsmouth, RI, Peter Thompson of Houston, TX and Maria Bassinder of Portsmouth, RI; and four grandchildren, Preston Bassinder, Trevor Kinsella, Madeline Bassinder, and Sarah Thompson.Funeral services with military honors will be private.
