Richard Gordon
Crockett
Jun 29, 1949 — Oct 21, 2026
Richard Gordon Crockett, affectionately known as "Rock," passed away following a courageous four-year battle with cancer. Born on June 29, 1949, at Newport Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island, Richard lived a life filled with love, laughter, hard work, and adventure. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend whose kindness and generous spirit touched countless lives.
Richard was the son of Gordon Lindsay Crockett and Barbara Elizabeth Crockett (Petersen). He grew up in Middletown, Rhode Island, alongside his brothers and sisters, spending much of their younger life near Easton's Beach. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1967, where he played football and met the love of his life, Cynthia Ann "Cindy" Crockett.
On May 5, 1973, Richard married his high school sweetheart, beginning a beautiful partnership that would span more than 53 years. Together, Richard and Cindy built a home filled with love and laughter on Bush Street and welcomed their daughter, Holly in November 1975. Their life together was an enduring love story filled with shared adventures, cherished memories, and an unwavering bond.
Richard was a true jack-of-all-trades who could turn his hand to just about anything. His working years took him from Frache's Bakery to hauling lobster traps on fishing boats and eventually to construction with JAM Construction. He took pride in his work, including projects involving the preservation of Newport landmarks. He helped lay bricks around Trinity Church and along Thames Street and worked moving trees, sometimes an inch at a time, at Rough Point for Doris Duke.
Richard later found a long and rewarding career as a bus operator with RIPTA, where he served for 35 years. He loved his job, the people he met, and the many places his work took him. His adventures didn't end when he clocked out, either. They bought a house in Conway, NH, with his best friends, Anne and Tom, where their families made memories for 42 years. He loved traveling to different places and continents with his family of friends, "the Peppermint Schnapps Gang," making memories that would last a lifetime.
Those who knew Richard will fondly remember his unmistakable personality and many familiar routines. His morning walks on the beach, followed by his roundabout route home to get his Megabucks tickets, were part of his daily life. When he wasn't traveling, friends could often find him enjoying his gardens, sitting on the deck and listening to music. He had a way of bringing people together, making them laugh, and making ordinary moments memorable.
Richard was also known on Bush Street as the neighbor who would help anyone and everyone. Quick to get out with his shovel (or spoon), he cleared driveways and sidewalks and lent a hand whenever someone needed it. His good nature, generosity, and willingness to help others were among his greatest gifts.
Above all, Richard was a family man. He cherished his wife, Cindy, his daughter, Holly, and his extended family. He treasured the friendships he built and the people who stood beside him through life's many ups and downs.
Richard was predeceased by his siblings Bonnie Kilroy, Donald Crockett, Gerry Crockett, Kenny Crockett, and brother-in-law Paul Hammons.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia Ann "Cindy" Crockett; his daughter, Holly Anne MacArthur, and her husband, Eric R. MacArthur; his sisters, Barbara Hammons, Lori Cherry, and Wendy Crockett; along with many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who considered him family. He also leaves behind the spouses and families of his deceased siblings, including David Kilroy and Gail Crockett.
Richard's greatest legacy is the love he gave, the kindness he showed, and the countless lives he touched. His light, laughter, and adventurous spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. His memory will live on in the stories shared, the laughter remembered, and the love he leaves behind, especially in the hearts of his wife and daughter.
There will be a celebration of Richard's life at a later date.
