Richard E Lendrum

October 3, 1933 — October 29, 2018

Richard Dick Lendrum, 85, of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, passed away on October 29, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

Richard was born October 3, 1933 in Sayre, PA to Harry Lendrum and Marguerite( Montgomery) Lendrum.

Richard was married to his High School Sweetheart, Elsa Sargent for 60 years.

Dick attended Rogers High School in Newport, RI and was on the Varsity teams for Football, Baseball and Basketball. Prior to enrolling in college, Dick served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves.

Richard was a member of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity at the University of Rhode Island, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Teaching, and was a Physical Education teacher, and Health teacher at Thompson Junior High School in Newport, for 35 years. While teaching, Dick also worked as a leader at the Boys Girls Club of Newport, during the Summer. Dick also worked as a Tour Guide for Viking Tours of Newport, where he worked for 20 years. Dick was a true Newporter, learning everything he could about his beloved hometown. He loved the many hundreds, even thousands of students that he had the privilege of teaching over his 35 years. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, and saw them win the World Series this week, and was also a loyal New England Patriots fan.



After retiring from teaching, Dick found another sport that he liked, Golf, and in April of 1999 he got a Hole in One at the Jamestown Golf Club in Jamestown, RI. After retiring from teaching, he and Elsa went on many travel adventures. They traveled across country on a bus, to visit our Glorious United States. Richard loved traveling to warm and exotic places such as, the Caribbean, Tahiti and the Azores.



He was a member of the United Baptist Church, fulfilling the roles of Deacon, Superintendent of Sunday Schools and Moderator under the late Rev. L. Edgar Stone.

Richard loved his 6 children, as well as his 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his wife Elsa Lendrum, and his children, Peter Lendrum and his wife Susan, Cheryl-Lynne Ferreira and her husband David, Robbin Boelter and her husband John, Kim Coleman and her husband Stephen, Jill Rooney, Dana Cudworth and her companion Ed Sadler, and his brother Robert Lendrum and his wife Gretchen.



He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings John Dieffenbach, C. Edward Dieffenbach, Edward Lendrum and Pauline Bradley.

Richards family would like to thank the various Health Care agencies throughout Newport County that provided wonderful care and compassion for the past few years.

Calling hours will be held on Friday November 2, 2018 from 4 pm - 7 pm at the Connors Funeral Home 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth, RI



His funeral will be held on Saturday November 3, 2018 at 10:00 AM in the funeral home.

Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Vaucluse Avenue in Middletown.
