Richard H. Shovelton

Richard H. Shovelton, 72, of Newport, died Saturday, September 10, 2016 surrounded by his family at home in Newport. Richard was born June 1, 1944 in Providence, RI, the son of the late Harold and Catherine (Pennoyer) Shovelton. He was married to Louise (Foster) Shovelton for 52 years. Richard worked for many years in the automobile industry. After his retirement he worked for the Newport Harbor Corporation. He loved to travel with his wife and family, all across the country and around the world. Rick was an avid reader, easily completing 5 books per week with his reading companion Xena the cat. He also enjoyed antique cars and no matter where he lived, he was dedicated to caring for his yard and garden. Most of all, he loved spending time with and caring for his grandchildren.He is survived by his wife Louise (Foster) Shovelton and two daughters, Elizabeth Brantingham and her husband D. Scott Brantingham of Newport, and Meghan Shovelton of Middletown, his siblings Nancy Converse of VA, Cathy Shovelton of TN and Joan Barrow of NJ, and Roy Shovelton of Pascoag, RI. He also leaves his three grandchildren, Tyler and Tess Brantingham, Jesse Ferreira and his great grandson, Ryan Daniel Kerr.Services will be held on Wednesday, September 14 with visiting hours from 5:00-8:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a memorial service at 7:00pm.
