Robert John Delehanty Jr., 91, of Newport passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, August 18, 2017 at Village House Nursing Home. He was the son of the late Robert John and Elizabeth (Pullen) Delehanty. He leaves behind his wife Philomena (McKenna) Delehanty of over 63 years. He was predeceased by Elizabeth Delehanty Davis, Claire Sullivan, and William R. Delehanty. He is survived by two sisters Barbara Perrier, Joyce Booth, and a brother Norman Delehanty. He leaves behind five children, Robert Delehanty III, Edward Delehanty, Colleen Breitenstein (Kenneth), Sheila Delehanty Picillo (Kenneth), and Brian Delehanty. He also leaves eleven granddaughters, and thirteen great grandchildren. Papa lived for his family, especially for Samantha Younger, he was smitten from the day she was born.Robert was born in Newport, RI on October 13, 1925. After serving in the United States Army during World War II from 1944-1946, he attended the Newport Business School. Then he worked for the Sherriff's Department of Newport, and later retired from the Finance Department at the Naval War College in 1986.Robert enjoyed to travel, he visited many countries, numerous islands, and all over the US with his wife by his side. His favorite pastimes were the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. But everyone knows Papa lived for his family. He always had a smile on his face, Always! He was surrounded by his family every single day. The love he gave to every single person who came into his life is indescribable. Papa was truly the most amazing husband, man, father, grandfather and friend anyone could ever wish for. He will be truly missed.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, August 22, 2017, from 5:00pm-7:00pm at the "Brick House", 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 23, at 10:00 am, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be private.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Village House Activities Fund, 70 Harrison Ave, Newport, RI 02840. Papa loved everyone who took care of him with their love and compassion for the past two years. A special thank you to the entire staff and friend, Juanita; you are very special to us all.
