Robert S. Richardson

Mr. Robert S. Richardson, age 67, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away on May 29, 2018. Robert was born on February 13, 1951 in Newport, RI to Gordon Jack Richardson and Florence (Perry) Richardson.

Big B as he was known by many friends and teammates, was a 1970 graduate of Rogers High School where he was Captain of the Baseball team. Home Run Richardson held many batting records in baseball and slow pitch softball leagues in Newport. As the owner and operator of Richardson Rug he sponsored many teams in Newport Softball League and Little League teams. He was a dedicated fan and player, and often was known to coach, pitch and hit for his teams, and often pitched through 3 or 4 games in a weekend tournament. Win or lose, he always enjoyed treating his teammates to a feast of chicken wings and cold beer. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of Newport and was known to hold court among friends at the Tavern. Bob was a loyal Red Sox fan and UMass Minuteman football, but was also the biggest fan of his children and grandchildren and their own accomplishments.

Robert is survived by his children Robert S. Richardson III, Bridget Richardson and Heather Bestoso and her husband Norman, all of Newport, as well as his brother Jack Richardson and his wife Sharon of Portsmouth, his grandchildren Norman Daniel and Lilly Bestoso, and nephews Lee Richardson and Jay Richardson and his wife Kelly of Portsmouth, and their kids Connor and Paige.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 10:00-11:00am in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Funeral services will be in the funeral home at 11:00am, and burial will follow at Newport Memorial Park.
