Roberta "Bobbie" Matthews

June 22, 1932 — July 31, 2016

Roberta "Bobbie" Matthews, 84, of Tiverton, RI (formerly of Windsor, CT and Milbridge, ME) passed away Sunday July 31, 2016 at the Sakonnet Bay Retirement Living facility. Bobbie was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Paul and Marion (Morgan) Anthony. She had one older sister, Grayce, who also preceded her in death. Bobbie met her future husband, Francis T. Matthews, on a blind date. They married after a brief romance and were two of the most happily married people to ever bless this planet. They raised four children in a house that was always busy with activities, friends, and a variety of pets. Bobbie was the consummate volunteer; she actively participated as a leader in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Friends of (several) Libraries, Historical Societies, and served as room mother for a variety of classes. She managed to save time for herself, taking art lessons and reading everything in sight with rather unusual fondness for murder mysteries.Ultimately, Bobbie and Frank ended up in Maine, enjoying life in the slow lane, learning to sail, rake blueberries and cherish the coming and going of time and tides. She found strength and comfort in her religion when Frank passed away suddenly at an early age. She continued to take advantage of travel and learning opportunities which included studying cooking in Granada Spain, wildlife studies in Alaska, and mystery writing in New Orleans. She continued to volunteer well into her 70s.A private memorial service (and family lobster race) will take place in the near future. Her love for her family and life will be carried on by her four children and their spouses, seven grandchildren and a great granddaughter: George and Kristel Matthews and their children, Scott and Elizabeth; Christopher and Donna Matthews and their children, Drew and Daniel; Erica and Justin Peach and their children, Graham and Erin; and Michele and Paul Anderson and daughter Jennifer Argenta and her husband Edward and their daughter Allison.
