Roger H. Moriarty, 88, of Portsmouth, RI, and Tequesta, FL and Malvern Pa passed peacefully on August 11, 2017 after an extraordinary life. Married to Marilyn Berg, of Penn Valley, PA, they met in college and have been together ever since. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Born in Newport, RI he was the son of the late Marjorie (Borden) Geisler and John "Jack" Moriarty. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Stephen Moriarty of Warren, RI.Roger was extremely devoted to his family and friends. They were his greatest treasures and his first concerns. Besides his loving wife, Roger is survived by his five children, Maureen Moriarty, Michael Moriarty, Mary Kae Moriarty, Lynnie McIlvain and her husband Bo McIlvain, Daniel Moriarty and his wife Melanie as well as his six grandchildren, Collin Moriarty and his wife Justine, Katie Roderick and her husband Anthony, Ryan Moriarty and his partner Ashley, John Moriarty, Kaela Moriarty and Mimi McIlvain. He also treasured time with his four great grandchildren, Logan Moriarty, Cameron Moriarty, Merrick Moriarty and Rynn St. Onge.Roger attended St. Catherine's, Rogers High School and The Portsmouth Priory, graduating in 1950, after serving 3 years in the Coast Guard. His Coast Guard service included deployments to Maine, Connecticut and the Arctic Circle, serving 2 years on the icebreaker U.S.S. Eastwind. He graduated from Villanova University in Philadelphia, PA with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1954 and began a highly successful career in the commercial construction industry. Roger held significant positions within the US Gypsum Company, JB Eurell Company, US Roofing, and was most proud of operating his own roof deck firm Moriarty Hoffner Inc., installing roof decks on commercial enterprises that changed the skylines of Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. He retired from Moriarty Associates, his commercial roof deck wholesale business, in his late 70's. He is a past president of the Roof Deck International Organization. His work ethic was formed as early as 9 years old, when he delivered milk before school. Roger was involved in a number of enterprises in Rhode Island that included Moriarty's Liquor Locker in Portsmouth RI and Moriarty's Invisible Fence. He was also very involved in community services including President of the Chester Valley Little League, President of the St. Patrick's Men's Guild, a committee member of the Portsmouth Economic Development, an ordained Oblate of the Portsmouth Abbey monastic community and many more. Marilyn and Roger were active supporters of The Right to Life and Catholic Charities home and abroad.His sports passions included the Villanova Wildcats basketball team, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, happily celebrating each of their successes. He was a devoted and vocal fan of all his children's and grandchildren's athletic competitions, and could always be heard offering encouragement from the sidelines. He spent many happy hours on golf courses in Rhode Island, Tequesta, Florida and the Philadelphia area. He was a lifelong political conservative and worked for various Republican candidates and campaigns wherever he resided.Prior to fulfilling one of his lifelong goals of retiring to their home on the Sakonnet river in Portsmouth, RI., Roger and Marilyn lived in Malvern Pennsylvania for over 40 years. Calling hours will be held on Friday August 25, 2017 from 4-7 PM in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 11:00 AM in St. Mary's Church, 330 Wood Street in Bristol, RI.
