Roland A. Lopes, 90 years young, residing at 51 Middle Road, Anthony House Portsmouth, RI, passed away peacefully, Friday, March 31, 2017, at the Newport Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 19, 1927 in Sao Miguel, the Azores, he was the son of the late Agostinho B. and Maria (Medeiros) Lopes. He came to the United States in April of 1931 at the age of 3 settling in Newport,RI. Roland served in the Marine Corps during WWII.He was the brother of the late Hermina "Minnie" E. (Lopes) Medeiros and brother-in-law of the late Joseph C. Medeiros and uncle of the late Linda M. Medeiros. He leaves his brother Edmund J. Lopes of Newport, RI, his nephew Edmund J. Lopes, Jr. of Newport, RI and his sister Kathleen M. Reedenauer, brother-in-law Paul of Middletown, RI and nephew Mark P. Reedenauer of Concord, NH.He was the husband of the late Patricia E. (Sardinha) Lopes. He is survived by his daughter Jane T. Lauth and son-in-law David McCarthy of Tiverton, RI, granddaughter Michelle Lauth of Portsmouth, RI; grandson David Lauth and wife Theresa and great-grandson Jonas of North Kingston, RI; daughter Deborah J. Barton and son-in-law Bruce of Newport, RI; daughter Lee E. Fitzgerald and son-in-law William of Portsmouth, RI and granddaughter Meredith of Bristol, RI; daughter Denise A. Vieira and husband Jeffrey of Newport, RI, granddaughter Gretchen Dugan and spouse Peter, and great granddaughter Ava and great grandson Anthony of Middletown, RI, grandson Gregory Vieira of Newport, and Stephen Biastre, wife Karen and grandson Nathan of Middletown, RI. He also leaves Shirley Walker of Portsmouth, RI, a very special person and companion of over 11 years.Educated in Newport he went on to own his own electrical contracting business until the late 80's. After which he worked for the Newport School Department, then becoming the City of Newport Electrical Inspector for a brief time. During semi-retirement, he worked at the Newport Naval Base in Public Works in the electrical department. Then retired to Florida with his wife Pat.Roland enjoyed playing golf and basking in the sunshine in Florida; loved taking his grand kids to Disney; relished clam boils in the summer; perpetually working on his home and yard and being surrounded by family and friends.He instilled a sense of work ethics in all his children and always was there to coach them through tough times with a calm approach, lending hand and open arms. He will be dearly missed.The family extends its sincere gratitude to the wonderful nurses and staff at Grande Islander Rehab Center for all their excellent care, especially Laura Thurston who provided many smiles and love.Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, from 4:00-7:00PM, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at 10:00AM, in the St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial services will follow at St. Columba's Catholic Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown.
