Capt. Ronald Charles Baer, age 74, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away on May 19, 2018 at home, surrounded by his loving family.Ronald was born in Fall River, MA on April 13, 1944 to Charles and Alice (Sperring) Baer. Ronald was the husband of the late Evelyn (Wills) Baer.Ronald completed education and training at Diman Technical School and began work as a Marine Draftsman. As his career evolved, he became a licensed Ship Captain, and established his career at Blount Marine Corp. retiring after 49 years, as Vice President.Ronald enjoyed time on the water, and shared his extensive knowledge of the bay with colleagues through the Propellor Club - Port of Narragansett Bay. After retirement he followed his love of boating, running the Providence to Newport and New Bedford to the Vineyard fast ferries. His favorite past times were spontaneous road trips around New England and frequent trips to Florida with his wife. His door was always open to family and friends whether they just needed someone to talk to or just drop in for a laugh. Above all, his greatest joy was spending time with his family.Ronald is survived by five children, Stephanie Moniz and her husband Jay of Newport, Sandra Baer of Newport, Shelley D'Andrea and her husband Mark of North Kingstown, Susan Kosegarten and her husband Joel of Middletown, and Stephen Baer and his significant other, Kellee Kores. He also leaves two brothers Douglas Baer of Fall River, and Russell Baer of South Dartmouth. He will be dearly missed by his grandchildren Breyanna Baer, Kierstin Kosegarten, Jay Moniz Jr., Emma Baer-Barlow, Mia D'Andrea, Magleny Vazquez, and Manuel Vazquez.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Evelyn Baer, and his brother Jack Baer.Calling Hours will be held Thursday, 24 th of May 2018 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, R.I.Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018, at 10:00 AM with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church, Broadway and Mann Ave., Newport, R.I.
