Russell A. Johnson

Russell A. Johnson, 73, of Portsmouth, RI passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Marianne DelNero Johnson who he married on June 7th, 1974. Born in Providence on October 7th, 1943, Russell was the son of the late Eric and Tyra (Nelson) Johnson. He was a graduate of The University of Rhode Island and worked at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center for 43 years as an electrical engineer. He loved working in his garden and spending time with his grandchildren whom they called "BT." He also enjoyed traveling with his wife to Maine and New Hampshire. One of his biggest passions was his love for animals. He leaves behind his best pal Teddy. Besides his wife he leaves his children Stacey Downing and her husband Steve of Middletown, and John Johnson and his wife Maria of Portsmouth. He is also survived by his brother: Raymond Johnson and his wife Linda of Alton Bay, NH and his mother-in-law Anna DelNero of Middletown. He was the grandfather of five grandchildren. Emma Downing and her fianc Brian Palakiko, Eliza Anthony and her husband William Anthony Jr., Christos Johnson, Melina Johnson, Maria Johnson and one great-granddaughter Allison Mae Anthony who was the light of his life. He also leaves behind a niece and a nephew. Calling hours will be held, Sunday June 11, 2017 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.Funeral services will be held Monday, June 12, 2017 at 11:30 AM in Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport.Burial will be private.
