Russell Eugene Batey

Portsmouth, RI - Russell E. Batey, 89 of Providence, passed away Friday, August 17, 2018 at home.He was the husband of Emeline (Sailor) Batey.Born in Nashville, TN, he was the son of the late John E. and Eula (Hudson) Batey.Mr. Batey served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War, retiring after 21 years. He worked as a Chef at Providence College for 15 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of former Mt. Zion AME, current member of Beacon Avenue Church of God, and the American Legion Post 18 in Portsmouth.Besides his wife of 39 years, he is survived by his daughters Gail Cavanaugh of Pawtucket, RI, Denise Carpenter of North Providence, RI, Sheila Carpenter of Providence, RI, Doreen Kennerly of Clermont, FL, Tita Batey of Warwick, RI, and Dianne Johnson of Stratford, CT, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. He is also survived by two nephews, Larry E. Batey of Tampa, FL and Norman Batey of Nashville, TN.He was the brother of the late John Batey and Marjorie Batey.Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 24, 2018 from 5-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.His funeral will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at 9:00AM in the Beacon Avenue Church of God, 103 Beacon Avenue, Providence, RI.Burial will follow with full military honors in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.Donations in his memory may be made to Hope Hospice and Palliative Care Rhode Island.
