Samuel Whitmire, 70, of Newport died unexpectedly Saturday, February 18, 2017 at home.Born on December 27, 1946 in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late Ulysses Sherman and Rosalee (Prestley) Whitmire. Samuel served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked for many years as a cook and food preparer in restaurants in Newport and Middletown.He is survived by his son Samuel W. V. Whitmire of Newport, RI, his brothers Ulysses A. Whitmire of Amityville, NY, Clarence D. Whitmire of Greenville, SC, his sister Emma Sue Phee of Piedmont, SC, and his former wife, Kathy Cole of Newport, RI.Samuel was raised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and was baptized at 15 years of age on July 7, 1962. When he established himself in Newport he regained his faith and devotion. Samuel was well known in Newport and Middletown for his active ministry preaching the good news of God's Kingdome. He is remembered as a person faithful to his responsibilities in life as well as his warm smile, friendly manner, and concern for others. He is greatly missed by his family and friends.Visiting and a brief service will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2017, in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI, at 9AM.Burial with Military honors will be in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, South County Trail, Exeter, RI.A Bible discourse remembering Samuel will take place on Saturday, March 4th, 2017 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 36 Hillside Avenue, Newport, RI, at 3pm.
