Sarah C. O'Dowd

April 19, 1935 — April 20, 2026

Dr. Sarah O'Dowd, 91, of the Rhode Island communities of Newport, Barrington and Riverside, passed away peacefully at St. Clare-Newport, on April 20, 2026. She was one day past her 91st birthday.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1935, Sarah was the daughter of Schuyler and Lucille Christian. She spent her formative youth in Decatur, Georgia, alongside her beloved sisters Nancy and Catherine, before the family moved to Princeton, New Jersey, in 1947. A brilliant student, Sarah earned a national scholarship to Radcliffe College (Harvard), where she graduated cum laude with a BA in English in 1957.

While in Cambridge, Sarah met her future husband, John Francis O'Dowd, then a chemical engineering student at MIT. Following graduation, the couple moved to John's native Canada before they settled in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1961. It was here Sarah began a distinguished lifelong career in education, starting at St. Michael's School.

Sarah's passion for learning led her to Brown University, where she earned a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1964 and a PhD in Linguistics in 1976. She later added a second Master's in Speech Pathology from the University of Rhode Island in 1982. Sarah retired as a Full Professor after several decades at the Community College of Rhode Island, leaving a legacy of mentorship and inspiration.

Beyond the classroom, Sarah was an accomplished author and historian. She published "A Rhode Island Original", a biography of the 19th-century abolitionist Frances Harriet Whipple Green McDougall. In 2004, Sarah was honored to accept the induction of Frances McDougall into the R.I. Heritage Hall of Fame.

Much of her historical interests lay in exceptional 19th century women. Her breadth of knowledge was such that the BBC interviewed her regarding her biographical research on Sarah Helen Whitman, the poet and fiancée of Edgar Allan Poe in support of a 2010 documentary.

In the early 2000s, Sarah shared her gift for storytelling as a memoirist for The Providence Journal Lifestyles section. One of her most memorable pieces humorously recounted her annual "Aaron Burr's Birthday" party-a cheeky tribute to her distant, "ignominious" cousin. She delighted in telling how her celebration of the infamous duelist was met with a raised eyebrow by the academic community in Chicago during her sabbatical from CCRI doing research in speech pathology at Northwestern University.

A woman of many talents, Sarah also was a gifted musician. She played piano for the Newport Player's Guild in the 1960s, served as the organist for Channing Church in Newport, and in recent years, delighted members of the Pembroke Club at Brown with her annual holiday piano performances.

Sarah was known for her kindness, her gracious spirit, and her devotion to her family and her longtime companion of over 45 years, James Martin, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her children: Kenneth J. O'Dowd and his wife Adela O'Dowd; Meredith A. Adams and her husband Edward K. Adams; and Christopher J. O'Dowd. She was the cherished grandmother of Julia O'Dowd, Angelica White, Micaela Adams, and Luke Adams, and the proud great-grandmother of Madelyn, Eloise, and Myah White.

A celebration of life will be held in May. For further information and service updates, please contact Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, RI.
