Sharon Lee Mooney

January 13, 1958 — July 24, 2014

On July 24, 2014 Sharon who was 56, died peacefully at home on the farm in Portsmouth, RI surrounded by her sister Colleen, close family and dear friends.Sharon was born in La Tuque, Quebec on January 13, 1958 and grew up in Montreal where she attended McGill University and achieved her Bachelor of Science degree. Sharon's first experience of Newport was as team meteorologist for the Canada I America's Cup team in 1983. After working with the Kiwi Cup teams in Fremantle, Australia and in San Diego she returned to settle in Newport where she made so many wonderful friends and when not working, could variously be found cycling, sailing, swimming, paddle boarding, skiing etcetera.She went to RISD and achieved her Master's degree in Landscape Architecture and then practiced for many years here.Colleen's husband Roger Martin and their daughter Julia Martin of Ottawa, Canada all enjoyed many wonderful summers visiting Sharon here in RI and always loved being with her in this beautiful place.Her late parents, Robert Edmund Mooney and Ruth Vanda (Moon) Mooney would have undoubtedly been very proud of Sharon's many achievements and accomplishments. Colleen and the family wish to thank the legion of devoted friends who offered such amazing support and kindness to Sharon over the past few months. Additionally, they would like to thank Carolyn and the team at the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties for the wonderful care they provided towards the end. Her funeral service will be private.Rather than flowers please consider making a donation in her name to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Save the Bay, McGill University or The Potter League.
