It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sylvia Brayton, who left us peacefully on July 9, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on March 15, 1936, in Minnesota, Sylvia became a cherished long-time resident of Aquidneck Island, where she made countless memories and connections throughout her vibrant life.
Sylvia was a trailblazer in her community, proudly known as the first female bartender in Newport, where she served at iconic venues such as The Pier and Cliff Walk Manor. She brought warmth and charm to her work at the front desk of the Budget Inn, where many guests were greeted by her welcoming smile.
You could find Sylvia tending to her beloved garden, nurturing a space filled with beauty and peace-often accompanied by the lovely birds that flocked to her yard.
Above all, Sylvia leaves behind her love of her life and her long -time partner Robert Cardoza. She was a devoted mother to her children - Minda, Barbara, Teresa, Robert, Mary, and Michael-and an adored grandmother and great-grandmother who took immense joy in every shared moment with her grandchildren.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, Palmer and Gladys Kleven, her son, William Potter, brother, Palmer Kleven, and granddaughter, Brooklyn Nichole Bishop.
A private graveside funeral service was held for Sylvia at St. Columba Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Visiting Nurse Home & Hospice, https://visitingnursehh.org/
