Thomas Dawson Mateer

Thomas Dawson Mateer, 82, of Newport, Rhode Island, and Humacao, Puerto Rico, died peacefully at Newport Hospital on October 8, 2017 after a short illness. Mr. Mateer was survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret F. Mateer; two daughters, Tamara Mateer Broderick, of Cocoa Beach, Florida; and Jodi D. Flora and her husband Robert, of Fairfield, Connecticut. He left behind three grandchildren; Rachel McCrea of Illinois; and Thomas and Ryan Flora of Fairfield, Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey D. Mateer; his parents Samuel and Margaret Mateer; and three older brothers; Samuel, Jacob and William (Bill) Mateer. Mr. Mateer graduated from the Ohio-Weslyan University with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Accounting in 1957. Tom served in the U.S. Air Force as a Navigator from 1957-1961.For the next 31 years, Tom was employed by the Union Carbide Corp. as a distribution manager in carbon products for the Puerto Rican Marine Operations Division. In 1992, He started TDM Consulting and continued work in transporting goods to Puerto Rico. Soon thereafter, he was Vice President of Turner Marine and did the bulk of work in the Port of New Orleans until his retirement in 1997.As a long-standing member of the 12th Masonic of the Princeton 38 Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the 12th Masonic District of New Jersey, he served in many roles, including the title of Worshipful Master.He absolutely loved the warm weather and spending time by the ocean. Tom's hobbies included a good cigar, reading, playing golf, traveling with Midge, and his family. Calling hours will be held on Saturday November 4, 2017 at Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Newport, RI 02840 from 2:30 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. followed by a celebration of life and Masonic service held in the funeral home at 3:00 PM. All who knew Tom are welcome to attend and celebrate his life.
