Thurston L. Gray, Sr

Thurston L. Gray, Sr., 80, of Mail Coach Road, Portsmouth, RI, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017 at Newport Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of 57 years to Mary (Lovejoy) Gray. Born in Blue Hill, ME on January 16, 1937, he was the son of the late Leroy Thurston and Hattie (Horton) Gray. Mr. Gray was an Electrical Engineer at Raytheon for 33 years before retiring in 1993. He was a graduate of the University of Maine, where he received his Bachelors of Science Degree and the University of Rhode Island, where he received his Master's Degree. Mr. Gray was an active volunteer and member of the AARP Tax Preparation Service for 30 years, the Melville Park Committee since 2006, the Newport Sail and Power Squadron as an educational officer and webmaster, the Naval Advisory Board, Smith's Castle in North Kingstown, the U.R.I. Watershed Watch, the Town Pond Restoration in Portsmouth, Save the Bay, and the Melville Pond Association. He was a longtime monthly blood donor with the RI Blood Bank and was a website developer for many local companies. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Susan Gray Fitzpatrick and her husband, Donald, of Newport, RI, Sandra L G Moriarty and her husband, Mike, of Portsmouth, RI, Thurston L. Gray, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Cranston, RI, and Kimberly Gray and her significant other, Paul Hochwarter, of Portsmouth, RI; his seven grandchildren, Alexander and Samuel Fitzpatrick, Erin Moriarty Lynch and her husband, Bill, Kayla and her fianc Kevin Schneider, Kennah Moriarty, Stephanie K. and John T. Teves; his great-grandson, Jack Lynch; and his brother, Terrence Gray and his wife, Sally, of Bath, ME. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. The funeral service and burial will be private.
