Veronica Susan Maus

Veronica (nee Wassel) Maus, 91, born on December 26, 1925 in Passaic NJ, died on November 6, 2017 at the Grand Islander Nursing Home in Middletown with family at her side. She was born in Passaic, NJ to John and Mary (Solomon) Wassel, and was one of 6 siblings: Claire Prince (CT) and pre-deceased by John Wassel (NJ), Raymond Wassel, (MD) Marie Hall (MD), Jerome Wassel (PA). There are many nieces and nephews in her large family.Veronica is also survived by 2 children - John (Jack) Maus of Gordonsville VA (wife, Lyn Bufton) and Veronica (Roni) Maus Meletta of Wyckoff NJ and Newport RI. She is pre-deceased by her son, Thomas, of Waipahu, HI and her husband, John (Jack) Raymond Maus. Veronica also has 6 grandchildren ( Rachel, Alison, Becca, Gregory, Dani and Courtnay) and 6 great grandchildren ( Katie, Kayla, Sarah, Xander, Asher and Gage).Veronica lived most of her life in Paterson and Midland Park, NJ. She graduated from The College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station NJ. She started her career as a teacher at St. Brendans School in Clifton NJ and continued as a Biology/Chemistry teacher, Department Head and Vice Principal over a span of 35 years at Eastside High School in Paterson, NJ. A movie starring Morgan Freeman called Lean On Me, was produced by Warner Brothers chronicling the time period Veronica worked under Principal Joe Clark ( a.k.a. BatMan on the cover of Time Magazine Feb. 1, 1988).Upon retirement at age 70, Veronica moved to Oahu Hi where she lived for 15 years before moving to RI to be with family, residing at Blenheim and then Grand Islander in Middletown.Calling hours will be held Thursday November 30, 2017 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Memorial Funeral Home 375 Broadway Newport, RI 02840.A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday December 1, 2017 at 10:00 AM in St. Mary's Church, 12 William Street Newport, RI 02840.Burial will be privateIn Lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Beacon Hospice at 1130 Ten Rod Rd, Suite C104, North Kingstown, RI 02852.
