Violet Caroline Rockwood

January 21, 1916 — February 25, 2019

Violet Rockwood, 103, of Middletown, RI, passed away at home on Monday, February 25, 2019 surrounded by family. She was the wife of the late Frederick Rockwood.
Born in County Cork, Ireland, she was the daughter of the late William and Caroline (Cooper) Walker in 1916. Her family traces its genealogy back to the Cromwellian era in the 17th century.

Violet attended Cork high school until she was 16. She completed her education at the Bray French School, a boarding school for girls in County Wicklow. There she studied the junior and senior Cambridge curriculum. Violets best subjects were English and mathematics. After high school she took a course in shorthand and typing to become a secretary. Violet was also a lifetime member of The Daughters of the British Empire.

During World War II both she and her brother wanted to enlist, even though southern Ireland was officially neutral. Violet had been deaf in one ear since early childhood and was not accepted. Instead, she went to London and worked for a company that made theatrical supplies.

While in London, Violet was persuaded to go on a double date by a widowed girlfriend. Her date was Frederick Rockwood, from Lynn, Massachusetts. She knew right away he was the one. After three dates, he proposed. After six weeks, she accepted. They were married in Cork at Christmastime 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge.

The newlyweds stayed with Freds parents until they could move into their first home at Point of Pines. Later, they moved to Revere where Fred worked as a baker and finished college. Violet worked as a secretary. Fred took a managerial position at the Raymond Baking Company in Waterbury, CT. The Rockwoods lived in Cheshire. After the arrival of their son, Douglas, in 1954 Violet stayed at home. She was an active volunteer for the Salvation Army and the Red Cross. She loved dogs and cats, and always had one of each.

Violet and Fred traveled extensively. They visited England every year and would then drive through various countries in EuropeAustria, Italy, France, Germany, and Switzerland. They visited Hawaii, Jamaica, Majorca, Barbados and the Scilly Isles. They also traveled throughout the United States.

Violet is survived by her son, Douglas Rockwood and was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Walker.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2019, at 11:00 AM in the Riverside Cemetery, 59 Sheffield Street, Old Saybrook, CT.
