Virginia C. (Elshant) Carrellas, 93, of Newport died on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at St. Clare Home in Newport. She was the wife of the late Alfred J. Carrellas, Sr.Born on March 10, 1923 in Middletown, RI, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Mendonca) Elshant. Virginia attended Portsmouth Public Schools and was a 1942 graduate of Sacred Hearts Academy, Fall River, MA. After high school graduation she was employed by the Short Line Bus Company and the New England Bell Telephone Company. Moving to Newport, RI in 1947 after her marriage, she became a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church where she was a member of the English Choir and a member of the Womans Sodality. She was a member of the Legion of Mary at the Naval Hospital Chapel by the Sea and was also an active member of the Constitutional Right to Life Committee of Rhode Island. She retired from the Newport School Department after twenty four years as a teachers aide and was selected to serve on the Newport School Committees Family Life Review Program Ad Hoc Advisory Committee.She is survived by her children, Michael Carrellas and his wife Patricia of Middletown, Paul Carrellas and his wife Leslie of Jackson Heights, NY, John Carrellas and his wife Mary of Haddam, CT, Thomas Carrellas and his wife Maureen of Windham, ME, Mary Ellen Barker and her husband David of Shelby, NC, and Jean Harrington and her husband Douglas of Newport, her grandchildren, Thomas Barker, Matthew Barker, Laura Barker, Andrew Barker, Theresa Price, Stephen Barker, Nathan Barker, Philip Barker, Michael Carrellas, Jr., Moriah Carrellas, Brenna Carrellas, Alexander Carrellas, Dominic Carrellas, Neyssa Carrellas, Charlotte Carrellas, and Clare Carrellas, her great grandchildren, Cadence Croucher, Ethan Croucher, Sienna Croucher, Reagan Barker, Murphy Barker, Holden Barker and Tallulah Barker, her siblings Eugene Elshant and his wife Ann of Portsmouth, Mary D . Elshant and Arleen Silveira of Middletown, her sister-in-law Geraldine Elshant and many nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son A. James Carrellas, Jr. as well as her brothers George Elshant, Sr. and Alfred Elshant.
