Walter J. Alves Sr

Walter J. Alves, Sr., of Middletown, RI, died on April 16, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family.He was the husband of the late Rachel Lucille (Martin) Alves.Born on July 29, 1924 in Middletown, RI, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Amelia) Alves. Mr. Alves served in the United States Army during WWII. He was a material handler for Raytheon for over 20 years, retiring in 1979.He loved gardening and taking care of his yard. He loved "tinkering" with lawn mowers or any kind of small engine. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 18 in Portsmouth, RI, he was the Sergeant of Arms for many years.He is survived by his children, Walter J. Alves, Jr. of Hudson, MA, David P. Alves of Barrington, RI, and Diane Collum of Middletown, RI, and his grandchildren, Robert Collum Jr., Shaun Collum and Melissa Collum, Sarah Erving, Rachel Alves, Ariel Alves and Sebastin Alves. He is also survived by his great grandchildren Hannah Erving, Shaun Collum Jr. and Lilian Collum.Calling hours will be held on April 21, 2017 from 5pm- 8pm at Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road in Portsmouth, RIHis funeral will be held on Saturday April 22, 2017 at 9am, from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Barnabas Church 1697 East Main Road in Portsmouth, RIBurial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown, RIIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Robert H.
