William F. Alsheimer Jr. 78 of Portsmouth passed away, Monday, May 7, 2018.
Born in Utica, NY on December 13, 1939 he was the son of the late William F. and Elizabeth (Fisher) Alsheimer.
He attended Utica Free Academy until he joined the U.S. Navy at 17. He was stationed in Newport, R.I. where he met and fell in love with Maryanne E. Tavares. They married in 1961 at St. Marys Church in Newport. He is survived by two sons William F. Alsheimer III and his wife Patricia of Portsmouth and Timothy L. Alsheimer and his wife Daniele of Middletown, RI. He is also survived by two grandsons Timothy L. Alsheimer Jr. and Evan M. Andre. He is also survived by his step-brother in Utica, New York.
The Doctor, as he was known around Newport, was employed by RIPTA for 34 years. He also worked for Short Line Bus Company which later became Bonanza Bus Line for 10 years.
He will be remembered as a kind and generous man, always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was a member of the Evangelical Friends Church for over 40 years, where he served as a head usher for many years. He supported many causes, but had a special place in his heart for Smile Train which helped children born with cleft lip and other facial deformities. Donations in his name can be made to them at

Calling hours will be held Thursday, May 10, 2018 from 4:00PM to 7:00PM in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840.
His funeral will be on Friday, May 11, 2018 at 10:00AM in the Friends Evangelical Church, 70 Bliss Mine Road, Middletown, RI. Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.
