William J. "Bill" Payton

William ?Bill? Payton, 59, of 9 Underwood Court Newport, died Thursday, August 15, 2002 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI. He was the husband of Marjorie A. Scheel Payton. Born in Newport, RI on December 10, 1942, he was the son of the late John W. ?Bill? and Margaret ?Monie? Gladding Payton.Mr. Payton was a 1961 graduate of Rogers High School. After graduation he went to work for the former Gray Typewriter Company in Newport and the Newport School Department in the maintenance department. He worked for 30 years as a Postal Clerk at the Main Post Office in Newport. Mr. Payton was an active member of the Portsmouth Grange, the Newport County Pomona Grange and the Rhode Island State Grange for over 40 years. He was also a member of the Postal Union were he served as their stewart. Besides his wife he is survived by two sons Paul T Payton of Warwick, RI, and Kenneth W. Payton of Mattapoisett, MA, his daughter Kathleen L. Payton Chapman of Newport, RI, two sisters Peggy Payton Taylor of Newport, RI, and Louise Payton Conover of Colorado, three grandchildren, tweleve nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2002, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 AM in St. Marys Church, Spring Street, Newport.
