It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of William Harvey Meikle, who left us unexpectedly but peacefully on June 23, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on November 18, 1950, in Newport, Rhode Island, he was the son of James Edward Meikle and Hope (Harvey) Meikle. Will lived a life rich in creativity, passion, and connection.
Will spent his early childhood years in Newport. In the mid-late 1950s, he and his family moved to Arizona. At a young age Will's artistic talent began. While in high school, he showed his talent as artist by creating sets for high school theater productions, as well as other art projects. During this time in high school, Will was also a very talented Tennis player. In 1969, he graduated from Flowing Wells High School, in Tucson, Arizona.
In June of 1970, Will was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After completing bootcamp at Fort Jackson, he was a MP stockade guard. In December 1971, Will was honorably discharged as an E-3.
When Will's military service ended, he eventually returned to his roots in Newport during the 1970s. He utilized the GI Bill to pursue a degree in Commercial Arts and Graphic design, at Southeastern Massachusetts University (now U-Mass Dartmouth). While studying at SMU Will worked various jobs including at Avid, in Middletown. In 1983, he started a civil service position as a laborer at the Newport Naval Station, public works department. Not too soon after, Will transitioned and started a new position at the Sign Shop, as a sign painter, where he became a familiar and talented figure at the Newport Naval Base for 35+ years before retiring.
Will's zest for life was evident in his love for music, with a particular fondness for the sounds of the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and many other musicians, as well as his avid collection of sports and classic horror movie memorabilia. During his retirement, Will enjoyed designing unique t-shirts for Teepublic, sharing his artistic abilities with a broader audience. Will also enjoyed following and watching sports, especially professional Tennis, the Red Sox, and the Patriots.
William is survived by his son, David Meikle, of Tiverton; and his brother James E. Meikle Jr. (Leslie), of Colorado Springs, CO.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Meikle; and his parents, James Edward Meikle and Hope (Harvey) Meikle.
A celebration of William's remarkable life will take place in the coming weeks. Exact details regarding the memorial services and ceremonies will be forthcoming, as we honor the joy, and creativity he so generously shared with all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, we encourage those who wish to commemorate William's life to consider a donation to the arts programs in Newport.
As we reflect on William's vibrant life, we remember not just the passing of a loved one but the enduring impact of his artistic vision, kindness, and unwavering spirit. May he rest in peace, knowing he leaves behind a legacy of love and creativity.
