William Beckwith "Bil" Powers Jr., a beloved husband, father, and dedicated pastor, passed away on October 6, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on June 22, 1947, in Danville, Virginia, William lived a life rich with purpose.
A proud Air Force veteran who served as a medic during the Vietnam War, Bil reached the rank of Master Sergeant (E-7) and dedicated over 20 years of service to his country. After his military career he studied at Johnson & Wales University, where he earned a degree in Hospitality Management and graduated summa cum laude. Later he worked diligently for the Red Cross in Dedham, Massachusetts, specializing in data, technology, and logistics systems.
In the 1990s, Bil was ordained as a pastor, beginning a ministry defined by compassion, encouragement, and service. Alongside his beloved wife, Sandra, he served the Gates of Praise Church in Fall River, where his warm greetings, thoughtful sermons, and charismatic presence inspired and uplifted the congregation. His deep-rooted Southern Virginia heritage remained a significant part of his identity, reflected in his charming Southern drawl and love for traditional Southern cuisine, particularly fish and chips.
Bil is survived by his devoted wife, Sandra Powers, whose partnership brought joy and strength throughout his life. He is also survived by his treasured daughter, Heather Powers, and his grandson Michael (Danielle) Ophus. He will be remembered not only for his service and ministry but also for his passion for photography, his affection for dogs, his love of cooking, and his constant proclamation, "I'm blessed" whenever asked how he was.
Calling Hours will take place on Tuesday, October 13, at Connors Funeral Home on 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, 02871 from 10:30am-12:00pm. A Funeral Service will take place at 12:00pm in the same location. Burial will follow at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, RI.
As we reflect on Bil's journey, we rejoice in the profound impact he made during his time on Earth and take comfort in knowing his spirit lives on in the hearts of those he touched. His legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Bil was preceded in death by his parents William (Sr.) and Virginia "Gene" Powers.
