William Smith Bailey Jr

William Smith Bailey, Jr., 85, of Middletown died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI. He was the husband of the late Isabelle (Gardella) Bailey for 53 years.Born on December 22, 1930 in Middletown, RI, he was the son of the late William S. and Dorothy C. (Peckham) Bailey Sr.Mr. Bailey was a graduate of Rogers High School and URI where he received his Bachelor's. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Bailey served with the Middletown Fire Department for 26 years, retiring as a Lieutenant. He was president and secretary of the Middletown Fire Departments Union Local 1933 and President of the Middletown Little League and coached the Babe Ruth team. Mr. Bailey was a parishioner at St. Columba Berkley, serving on the vestry. He was an avid bowler on a State Bowling League. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time with his sons, spouses and his grandchildren.He is survived by his children, William and Brenda Bailey III, and Lawrence and Michelle Bailey, and his grandchildren, William Michael Bailey, Timothy Joseph Bailey and Mary Elizabeth Bailey, Katelyn Isabelle Bailey and Meghan Michelle Bailey.He was the sister of the late Dorothy Spingler.His calling hours will be held on Wednesday November 9, 2016, from 4-7pm, in the Hambly Funeral Home, Brick House, 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, RI.His funeral will be held on Thursday November 10, 2016, at 11 am, in St. Columbas, The Berkeley Memorial Chapel, 55 Vaucluse Avenue, Middletown, RI.Burial will follow in Middletown Cemetery, Turner and Wyatt Road, Middletown RI.In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Tomorrow Fund, 593 Eddy Street, Providence, RI 02903.
