Who You Are

You're working toward becoming a licensed funeral director, and you want to learn from people who will actually teach you, not just hand you tasks. You're steady around death and grief, even when you're still new to it. You take direction well, but you're not passive, you're paying attention so that one day you can lead a service yourself.


This role is an education, not just a job. Everything you do here is building towards your license.

What You'll Do

  • Work under the close supervision of a licensed funeral director/embalmer, learning the trade from the ground up
  • Assist with transfers, embalming, dressing, casketing, and preparation of the deceased
  • Support funeral directors during services, visitations, and arrangement conferences
  • Help with general facility and equipment care and maintenance
  • Meet the requirements and standards of Rhode Island's funeral service apprenticeship program
  • Maintain the highest standards of ethics, confidentiality, and respect in every part of the work

What This Actually Involves

  • You must be currently enrolled in, or formally committed to, a certified funeral service apprenticeship or licensure program
  • Comfort with hands-on work involving the deceased, including embalming and preparation
  • Ability to lift and maneuver significant weight safely, with assistance when needed
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record
  • Strong communication skills, since you'll interact with families as well as funeral directors



No prior experience is required beyond enrollment in your licensure program. We'll teach you the rest, and we take that responsibility seriously, since we're training the funeral director, you'll become.
