Kim Shute's Review of Eternity
A movie about figuring out who to spend eternity with.
My fiancé Matt and I saw a trailer recently for the movie Eternity, a movie about a woman who has recently died and must choose which of her dead husbands to spend eternity with.

We decided that when it came out, we should watch it. As many of you know my husband, died in 2015, and, and I have since re-partnered. I still miss my husband every day and magically wish he was still here to share life with me. And yet I recognize I am still here with my feet very much planted on the earth in a life, my life. My husband--when he was alive-- and I had conversations about the very situation I find myself in: To date or not to date after his death. We gave each other “permission” to look for love and happiness following the death do us part section of our vows.
My partner Matt has always been accepting and not at all jealous of my late husband. Matt and I often joke about our circumstances- if there is an afterlife who would I pick to spend eternity with? My stock answer is I imagine them both tucking me into bed nightly and then going off to discuss sci-fi books and movies they love followed by strategic board games. I will provide them with a best friend who is not me. With two of them I might get all the attention I require! And yet if there is an afterlife, I suspect many things that are common place here in life on earth might be challenged with a new way of seeing and being.
This is idea is exactly why we wanted to watch the movie Eternity when it was released. The story is a about a woman who had two husbands in her 8 decades of life, one in her early 20s which ended with his tragic death in the Korean War and another which lasted more than 60 years and blossomed into a family. In the world of this film, the woman must choose who to spend eternity with and the deceased husbands are essentially competing for her attention often in childish ways to win her for eternity (which I must point out is a lot longer then 60 years).
I thought the film had a cool premise, but it fell short of what it tried to accomplish or what I thought it could have. In the end it felt like just another romantic comedy.
In the end, I was disappointed. The script was not very imaginative about the problem or the answer that the film highlights. I think it is still worth watching as it was the inspiration for several hours of expansive conversation between us. If you see it, please let us know what you thought of the experience.
